One of the most successful ways I have found to develop thumb rotation is the use of Chinese Exercise Balls. Unfortunately these are typically too big for children’s hands. In comes the marble tom bowlers.
One of my most essential and successful additions to the fine motor development kit and one that I frequently recommend for parents to carry over at home. Not only a great opportunity to develop thumb rotation in readiness or refinement of handwriting, but also a great activity to encourage palmar arching as the little finger side of the hand supports the movement of the marbles as well as developing motor planning within the hand. Once a child has developed the general motor plan required you can also encourage them to keep going without their eyes helping to further develop their proprioception within the hand. Have some on hand to do while driving places in the car, while watching TV, as a specific hand warm up for handwriting or as part of your therapy kit.
